Bryan Segers
Bryan Segers is a self-taught Dutch composer on the autism spectrum. He has been an autodidact for most of his life and began playing Mozart and Chopin melodies by ear at the age of four. At the age of twelve, he finally began piano lessons.
Rather than choosing to pursue high school, Segers enrolled in a piano-mechanics course while pursuing his interests, including art and languages. At this time, the Conservatory of Amsterdam began to take interest in him. He enrolled in the Conservatory for one year, studying composition and piano, before being forced to quit due to illness. Before his departure, he was lauded with recommendations that enabled him to continue enrolling in master classes, while still allowing him the time to focus on himself and his well-being.
Segers has also studied Game and Film music and has composed for animation shorts. He has also written several challenging pieces for piano, including études, geared to professional pianists. His music is both fun and challenging, often in need of precise fingering and specific use of pedaling. He has also arranged several pieces, including an opera for a saxophone quartet on commission. He’s best known for his sets of Christmas variations on the theme 'Deck the Halls.'
Currently diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder, Segers is not able to play piano like how he did in the past. Luckily, his health is steadily improving and he finds joy in life through composing. ‘It doesn’t really matter what I do in life, even if years have passed, I always come back to writing sketches. But in particular I come back to the piano, to find myself if and when I’m lost.” - BAJ Segers
